University of Florida researchers Nam Dang and colleagues in Japan, in a report published in the Journal of Ethnopharmacology, papaya documented anticancer effects against tumors of the cervix, breast, liver, lungs and pancreas.
Fight Cancer With Papaya Leaf Extract |
The researchers used extracts made from dried papaya leaves, and the effect is stronger when cells receive a greater dose of papaya leaf tea.
Dang and other scientists showed that the papaya leaf extract increases the production of key signaling molecules called Th1-type cytokines, which help regulate the immune system.
This could lead to therapeutic treatment that uses the body's immune system to fight cancer, they said in the February issue of the journal and was released on Tuesday by the university.
Papaya has been used as traditional medicine for various diseases in many parts of the world, especially Asia.
Dang said the results are consistent with reports of indigenous people in Australia and Vietnam are genuine.
The researchers said the papaya extract has no toxic effect on normal cells, avoiding a common side effect of treatment of various cancers.
Research 10 types of cancer cell cultures to the four powers papaya leaf extract and measured the effect after 24 hours. Papaya slows tumor growth in all cultures.
Dang and his colleagues have been preparing for a patented process for extracting papaya through the University of Tokyo.
